This is an exceptionally rare Toshiba K-Type-A multi-pattern ribbon microphone. It was Toshiba's flagship microphone and was manufactured in extremely small quantities. In fact, we've only seen (and acquired) three of this specific version of K-Type, know as the OB-1222A, and even though all three were acquired from different sources years apart, they are all within five serial numbers apart (4003, 4005, 4009) which likely means they only made a few dozen, and we got numbers 3, 5, and 9. This one is 9 (4009).
Toshiba made a few different versions of the K Type, and we have seen and used the OB-1222B, OB-1222D, and OB-1222E. Of the four different versions we've inspected and listened to, this version (OB-1222A) is the heftiest in weight and sound. It is also the only one that has two inductor-based stepped equalization filters. A 5-position low-cut and a 4-position high cut.
Like all multi-pattern ribbons using a blocked acoustic chamber (like the 77D/DX), the Type K sounds by far the best in its unobstructed bi-directional position - and quite good at that. Huge low end, smooth midrange, and a natural top end. It outperforms any RCA 77 I've ever heard.
This particular mic has been serviced with a new ribbon by Cole Suddarth (Cole Picks Vintage). It has a few cosmetic issues as can be seen in the photos, but is otherwise in perfect working order. It comes with its original steel "lunchbox" suitcase with matching serial number.
This is a very rare opportunity to own one of the nicest ribbon mics ever manufactured at a fraction of the cost of a more famous and inferior American-made version. Sorry, Radio Corporation of America, the truth hurts baby.

The recording below was made entirely using only a pair of K-Type microphones. There is no processing on any of the tracks.
We also have the original multitrack stems if you'd like to hear the mic on individual sources. Please reach out for access.
