DETAILED DESCRIPTION (click to expand)

The RV-1a is an NHK-specified Aiwa VM17, Japan's superior version of the RCA 77D. NHK, Japan's major broadcasting station, commissioned microphones to their exact specifications, similar to RTF (French Radio and Television Broadcasting) and the BBC.

This RV-1a sounds perfect but looks kind of insane and is priced accordingly. If you prefer a microphone with some historical character, then this is the one for you. That green paint is really on there!

NHK ribbon models feature superior output transformers and components, with noticeably improved frequency response - impressive considering the Aiwa VM17 is already one of the best ribbon mics we've encountered, outperforming the RCA 77D/DX.

Like most Japanese ribbons, it features a 5-position low roll-off switch at the bottom. Only an estimated 600-700 of these microphones were manufactured, and this is number 216. As with all 77D-style microphones, it performs best in its unobstructed bi-directional pickup pattern, delivering full but balanced low-end, a meaty midrange, and remarkably smooth top-end.

This RV-1a has been fully serviced, cleaned, and re-ribboned by Cole Suddarth at Cole Picks Vintage and includes its original suitcase.
