DETAILED DESCRIPTION (click to expand)

This is a very hard-to-find Fostex M77rp "Regular Phase" microphone, which was marketed by Fostex as their Regular Phase kick drum microphone, but we've found that it excels in every application we've used it in, including vocals and overheads.

The microphones from Fostex's line of "Regular Phase" microphones from the 80's and 90's are often referred to as "Printed Ribbon" microphones (and eventually even Fostex started using that term), and this is because they have a proprietary capsule design that has the coil printed, or etched, into the diaphragm. This makes the microphone neither a dynamic nor a ribbon by design, but some kind of a hybrid which has the same accurate phase response and pistonic movement of a ribbon, with the durability and SPL handling of a dynamic.

The most common Fostex Printed Ribbon mic is the M88rp, a bi-directional a side-address mic. Even though it uses the same dynamic element, the M77rp is designed to be front address and unidirectional, and has a frequency and phase response that happens to be suitable for kick drums, toms, snare drums, guitar cabinets, and even drum overheads.

These mics rarely come up for sale, and we're on the fence about selling the two we have listed. No, we're not selling all of our M77rp's, we still have three more in our mic locker. But five would be cool... but probably not necessary. Anyway - there are two of these mics for sale here (as of now), and you can buy them both.

The recording below was made entirely using a pair of Fostex M77rp's. This is our second original Microphone Jingle, written and performed by Lewis Rogers. There is no processing on any of the tracks.

We also have the original multitrack stems if you'd like to hear the mic on individual sources. Please reach out for access.
