This VM17 has been fully serviced, cleaned, and re-ribboned by Cole Suddarth at Cole Picks Vintage. This particular VM17 has a Functional Condition score of 7.0 for one reason only - the thumbwheel is jammed, keeping it in its natural unobstructed bi-directional polar pattern. This has never been an issue since bi-directional mode delivers the best sound by far. Otherwise, this mic is in excellent working order with a fresh ribbon and great aesthetics.
This microphone's twin sister is also available, and the two of them were our studio pair for several years. The sister is a beautiful example inside and out, and even comes with its original case, manual and frequency response chart.
The Aiwa VM17 was Japan's far-superior version of the RCA 77D, with better build quality, consistency, and overall sound.
The Aiwa VM17 is one of the best ribbon mics we've ever heard, far outperforming the RCA 77D/DX. Reach out for a direct comparison between the VM17, an RCA 77D and two 77DXs, all fully serviced.
Like most Japanese ribbons, it features a 5-position low roll-off switch at the bottom. As with all 77D-style microphones, it sounds best in bi-directional mode, delivering full but balanced low-end, a meaty midrange, and remarkably smooth top-end.
